Silver City – Revisited

I’m enjoying being back in the NW and especially in Kitsap County where the restaurants are unique and homey.  The franchises are few and far between but the food is still wonderful!  Silver City Brewery in Silverdale, WA is no exception.

This past Saturday I had the pleasure to revisit one of my favorite dining spots in Silverdale with a good friend.  Although Silver City is undergoing a remodel, that did not keep the staff from being as accommodating as usual.  The waitstaff in this establishment always goes the extra mile in this blogger’s opinion – something that makes the dining experience all the more pleasurable.  The cost may be a bit above others, but the ambience, the food and the service make it well worth it!

I dined on my favorite entree – filet mignon.  This was served with clam chowder and Silver City does it well, I do believe that only Ivar’s compares.  I have missed this meal since I’ve been away for the last year.  A filet mignon topped with my favorite treat of (not on the menu, this must be asked for), haystack onion strings or garlic butter if you so choose.  I opted not to a bulb of roasted garlic.  An addition of asparagus – my favorite veggie and I favor very few of those!

A great meal with a good friend sharing a fun time – who could ask for more?  Me, that’s who!  We added creme brulee cheesecake and it was so creamy and delightful and I wanted a second piece.  I was hesitant as I usually like my cheesecake with fruit topping but when my friend received her piece it looked so delightful, I couldn’t resist and ordered one for myself!

I will always recommend Silver City — in the heart of Silverdale and worth every bite!!

Famous Dave’s BBQ

This week was my first week in my new neighborhood in Silverdale.   I decided to try Famous Dave’s BBQ for the first time.  On a quick break from work, I spotted a burger on their on line menu that looked promising.

Upon entering the restaurant, it had a definite feel of southern BBQ joint – very down home like.  I was asked if I’d been there before and responded “no”.  Although I was prepared with what I wanted to order having seen the menu ahead of time, the waitress did offer a sampling of sauces so I could sample for future visits and possible try on my fries or burger if desired.  I was quite glad she did this.  Being a fan of BBQ, it was a pleasure to be able to try the sauces in advance of a future visit.

I ordered a plain burger which was cooked perfectly – a bit large for my appetite, but prepared well and with an added mustard sauce provided, quite satisfying.  Fries were potato wedges and quite good as well.  I had ordered “a few” onion tanglers but ended up with a large bowl.  Good at first, but some had little or no flavor so became dissatisfying.  When prepared well, these are a favorite of mine and I was a little disappointed.

Other than the onions, I was very pleased with my lunch.  Portion sizes are abundant so one must be prepared for that.  For those with a smaller appetite like mine, sharing a meal may be a good plan but for this type of venue, it almost is expected I think.

I would definitely return to try something else “with sauce”.

My Return to the PNW – So Good To Be Home!

After spending 9 months in Northern Minnesota with my family, I have finally returned to the home I love – the great PNW!  Where the mountains are stupendous, the food is fabulous and the people are the friendliest on the planet.  Having lived in Montana and now in the Midwest, I can easily say that there is no place I would rather be living for a multitude of reasons.  One day, while in a salon I met a young woman who was planning to move to Portland.  She asked what the best thing about Seattle was… I paused for a moment to think, there were so many reasons I could think of.  I first thought of my friends that meant so much to me but they would mean nothing to her.  I then thought of Mt. Rainier and the other mountain ranges whose daily views I had grown to miss as much as the air I took in.  But it all came down to the food.  Living in a rural small town and suddenly having limited culinary choices was almost painful to me.  I yearned to have sushi once again – sushi that was prepared by a true sushi chef, not in a grocery store.  Chinese food that was not in a buffet line.  Thai food I didn’t have to drive 200 miles to taste.  Seafood and quality chowder… well, we were miles from the ocean so that was pretty much out of the question.

So let my new adventure begin… in the kitchen and in restaurants… I hope to challenge myself to try foods I haven’t tried before.  Please join me on my adventure!

I am happy to report that I am returning to Washington State prior to my expected return date of early May!  I will be moving to Silverdale, WA on April 1 of this year an am beyond excited.  Excited to begin sampling of my beloved PNW and to be “home” at last.  Although it was wonderful to be among family for almost a year and especially to be close to my daughter as she transitioned from college to young adult, it is time to return to the PNW and my real home.

In the months to come I will be writing of the restaurants I have sampled and recipes I have tried myself at home.  I hope you’ll join me on my food adventures throughout the PNW!

Hello world!

Welcome to my blog.  A diary primarily of my epicurean adventures in the PNW and beyond, but will include other thoughts, ideas and happenings in my life.

A little about me.. I am 48, unmarried but not single, presently residing/working in Minnesota to spend some time with daughter and parents… will return to Seattle in May (yahoo!).  I miss Seattle desperately for many reasons… friends, food, culture, work, the list is endless… but for now I am in the Midwest… I would call it Siberia quite shortly…. but will continue to review restaurants from here as well… all food does deserve to reviewed after all.

I have no culinary training…  I am an accountant by trade.. but do appreciate a good meal…  I enjoy comfort food to gourmet food and am willing to pay extra for the very best.  I am not one who indulges in vegetables however…  best not to tell me what I’m eating if you want me to try something you think I may not like…  that’s how we end up liking new things I have found… that’s how I ended up liking sushi… I’ll try anything once….  but if I don’t like it…  that’s probably going to be it for life…

That’s it for today……………….
